While officers were en route to the Greyhound Bus Depot, people there were calling 9-1-1 with additional information and dispatch was giving officers updates: The man with the knife was holding a female around the neck. The female was on her knees and the man was holding her by the hair and had a knife to her throat. The man had the female on the ground.
Inside the main depot is an area that is cordoned off by a brick and glass barrier. Access to the area is gained through turnstiles. The five officers, who arrived and entered the main depot, found themselves on the westside of the barrier. On the eastside of the barrier, on the ground and some distance from the barrier, officers observed a man and woman. While the man had his hands at the woman's throat, no knife was visible, that is, until he was given commands. The man then reportedly raised a knife, yelled some type of obscenities and started the knife back down towards the woman, at which time one of the officers, carrying an AR-15 rifle, fired one round which struck and fatally wounded the subject.
The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office is overseeing the investigation which is being conducted by the East County Major Crimes Team and Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detectives. The Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The name of the deceased will be released after positive identification and next of kin have been notified. The woman involved sustained a cut on her throat. The woman's name, relationship to the deceased and other information will be released as it comes available. The name of the officer is being withheld for 24-hours to allow the officer to contact family.
The Investigation is continuing.
