Fat Tuesday Celebration Requires Police Response

On Tuesday evening, February 24, 2004, the traditional celebration of “Fat Tuesday” brought thousands of revellers into the downtown Portland area. As the evening progressed, Portland Police Officers broke up numerous fights and received a number of complaints from women stating that they had been touched inappropriately.

Police took more than a dozen minors into custody for violation of the City’s Curfew Ordinance and transported approximately 15 people to Hooper Detox Center. Fifteen other people were arrested for a variety of minor charges such as Disorderly Conduct.

Traffic Officers arrested 13 individuals for Driving under the Influence of Intoxicants and issued more than 40 citations.

There were no reports of serious injuries or any type of property damage stemming from the celebration.
