Defendant in Murder Case Indicted on New Charges

March 05, 2004 00:00

On January 16, 2004, Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detectives arrested 30-year-old Deniz Aydiner in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Catherine “Kate” Johnson. Johnson, a University of Portland student, was found dead in her dorm room on May 29, 2001, on the University of Portland campus. On March 4, 2004, Deniz Aydiner was indicted on three counts of burglary in the first degree for burglarizing dormitory rooms in Mehling Hall at the University of Portland. The burglaries reportedly occurred during spring break in March 2001. Items seized as part of the homicide investigation at Aydiner’s residence on January 16, 2004, were later identified as having been taken during the spring break burglaries.

Aydiner, who is currently lodged in the Multnomah County Detention Center, will be re-arraigned the week of March 8, 2004, on a new 17-count indictment for the charges related to the Murder of Catherine Johnson and for the additional 3-count indictment for Burglary in the First Degree.

Contact Detective Jon Rhodes at (503) 823-0459 or Detective Barry Renna at (503) 823-0255 if you have any information about the Mehling Hall burglaries.
