CHIEF FOXWORTH'S STATEMENT REGARDING GRAND JURY'S DECISION

April 22, 2004 00:00

"The Grand Jury’s decision today is just one step in the process of the review of this incident. The Portland Police Bureau respects this process and will now turn to the next step, which is a public inquest, followed by an internal administrative review and a federal civil rights investigation.

“There is heightened emotion in the community, but I once again ask people to be patient and channel their frustration and energy into peaceful actions. There are many questions regarding this incident, and I am hopeful that the public inquest, which the Portland Police Bureau supports and will participate in, may answer some of those questions.

“The Portland Police Bureau remains a good organization with solid values. The men and women of this Bureau work hard to ensure public safety. This is a difficult time for them and the entire community, and that is why we must focus on the process and patiently support it. There is a lot of work to be done unrelated to this incident, and we ask the community to join us in our ongoing community policing efforts.”
