Southeast Precinct Officer Arrests Man For 30 Burglaries

June 09, 2004 00:00

On June 6, 2004 just before midnight, a southeast precinct officer responded to a fraud call at the Walgreens, on SE 39th/Belmont. Once inside, he encountered 33-year-old James Sparley, who was trying to use a stolen credit card. The officer conducted an investigation and determined the credit card had been stolen in a burglary at a nearby tavern.

The officer knew businesses in the nearby Hawthorne business district had been suffering the effects of a prolific burglar over the past year or so. He transported Sparley to southeast precinct. There, a detective picked up the investigation. Eventually, police arrested Sparley on approximately 30 counts of burglary.

Sparley was booked at the Multnomah county jail.

While this arrest may bring some relief to area business owners, Detectives believe there are other people responsible for burglaries in the area, and encourage anybody who sees suspicious activity around a business after hours, to call police right away.
