From April to June 2004, the Portland Fire Bureau has responded to twenty separate vehicle fires in east and southeast Portland, caused by acts of arson. The Gresham Fire Department has responded to similar fires set in the Rockwood neighborhood of Gresham. Based on information gathered by arson investigators, they believe these fires may be the work of one person.
Investigators believe the victim vehicles have been selected at random. Most of the fires have occurred between 8:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. The estimated dollar amount of damage to vehicles so far is over $100,000. The vehicles targeted are usually parked on the street in residential or business districts, or in parking lots. At least one fire was near an occupied apartment building.
A number of port-a-potty fires have occurred in the same geographic area and during the same time frame. These may be the work of the same suspect.
Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information, reported to Crime Stoppers, that leads to the arrest of the suspect in this case, or any unsolved felony, and you may remain anonymous. Call Crime Stoppers at (503) 823-HELP (4357).
