Police Will Give Bike Helmets To Kids In St. John's

July 08, 2004 00:00

On Friday July 9, 2004, at 4 p.m., members of the Portland Police Bureau’s North Precinct, will give out free bicycle helmets to children in four St. John’s area apartment complexes.

This event is part of an ongoing effort by officers in North Precinct to reach out to all members of the community in order to improve neighborhood livability, reduce crime and the fear of crime, and to build relationships between members of the community and the Portland Police Bureau. For weeks, officers have participated in bike patrols in the same area, concentrating their efforts in the late afternoon and evening hours.

The apartments included are: the St. John’s Woods, Ridgecrest Timbers, Parkside Commons, and Pier Park Apartments. Police hope to distribute as many as 300 helmets to children. The helmets will be given free of charge, courtesy of Emanuel Hospital.

The event will include the Portland Police Bureau’s Mobile Precinct and representatives from the Boys and Girls Club will be on hand. All members of the community are invited to stop by to say hello and talk with officers who work in their neighborhood.
