Suspect Arrested in Downtown Homicide

December 23, 2004 00:00

On Thursday, December 23, 2004, at 8:18 am, Portland Police officers responded to a reported shooting near the area of Southwest Morrison Street and Southwest 5th Avenue. As officers arrived they saw the body of a 41-year-old white male lying on the sidewalk and made contact with 56-year-old Vincent Edward Stemle Jr. who immediately surrendered. Officers recovered a handgun from Stemle and took him into custody. Homicide Detectives were called to the scene and initiated an investigation.

An autopsy, conducted Thursday afternoon, has determined that the victim died of “gunshot wounds”. The name of the victim is currently being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Detectives will confirm that the victim has had recent contact with Portland Police because of mental health concerns. Stemle has been charged with one count of Murder and will be lodged in the Justice Center Jail.

Detectives continue to seek information from anyone who may have seen any portion of the crime or anyone who may have seen Stemle in the minutes prior to the shooting. Detectives believe Stemle walked onto a Tri-met near the intersection of Southwest 5th and West Burnside Street at approximately 8:05 am. The bus traveled Southbound on 5th Avenue to the area of Southwest Morrison where Stemle exited the bus and contacted the victim.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Portland Police Bureau Detective Division at (503) 823-0400.

This investigation is continuing.
