1. Designating Officer Larry Anderson, a 25-year-veteran, to serve as the Police Bureau’s minority recruiter. Officer Anderson will focus on recruiting women and minorities from the local area by visiting college campuses, churches, and neighborhood associations.
2. Enhancing the Police Bureau’s Website to allow potential recruits the opportunity to explore a potential career with the Portland Police Bureau.
3. Designing brochures and recruitment materials highlighting the careers of twelve current Portland Police Officers of various background, ethnicity’s, and ranks who have volunteered to shares the reasons and rewards of becoming a member of the Portland Police Bureau. Their stories and pictures will appear on posters, brochures, fliers, and advertisements.
The hiring forecast in the original release was based on existing vacancies and projected retirements over the next eighteen months. The forecast does not include any additional Police Officer positions above the current authorized staffing levels. During the next eighteen months, ninety-six police officers become eligible for retirement. Based on historical averages, the Police Bureau anticipates thirty-five to forty-five of the eligible officers to retire during that time.
