Investigators Seek Info On Second Vehicle

April 04, 2005 00:00

April 2, 2005 just after 3:00 a.m. Portland Police responded to a single vehicle fatal crash at the intersection of Southeast 162nd Ave and Southeast Powell Blvd.

A Gresham Police officer, on an unrelated call, reported seeing the vehicle southbound on SE 162nd near SE Division, driving at a high rate of speed. A short time later a Portland Police officer saw the vehicle southbound on SE 162nd approaching SE Powell and at high rate of speed. The officer heard the sound of a collision and went south on SE 162nd to investigate. The officer discovered that a Chevy Tracker crashed into a utility pole and a traffic signal pole on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The driver of the Tracker, 43 year old Bart R. Michael of Portland, was alone in the vehicle and died at the scene.

There was second vehicle, a dark SUV, seen possibly following the vehicle that crashed. The second vehicle paused at the intersection of SE 162/SE Powell after the crash then drove off in an unkown direction. Investigators are looking for information about this vehicle and would like to speak to any potential witnesses.

The Portland Police Traffic Division Fatal Crash Team responded to the scene. There were no skid marks and investigators believe speed was a factor in this crash.

The intersection of SE 162/ SE Powell was closed for about three hours.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Officer Peter Kurronen of the Traffic Division at 503-823-2208.
