On Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at 3:52 am, Portland Police responded to a residence in the 14200 block of Southeast Market Street to assist paramedics with a medical call. Officers arrived and discovered 50-year-old Gabriel Thomas Gefre Jr. unconscious in the home. Gefre appeared to be highly intoxicated and had a head injury that was initially reported to officers as having been sustained in a fall to the ground. During subsequent investigation officers determined Gefre was the victim of an assault. Gefre was transported to Emanuel Hospital where he died while receiving medical attention.
Because Gefre also had some pre-existing medical problems, it was not immediately clear if he died of his new injuries or an unrelated medical problem. On July 8, 2005, the Medical Examiner performed an autopsy and determined that Gefre died of “blunt force head injuries” and ruled the death a homicide. Homicide Detectives, who initiated an investigation immediately after Gefre died, attended the autopsy and are seeking assistance from anyone who may have information in this investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Brian Steed at (503) 823-0395 or Detective Steve Ober at (503) 823-4033. Detectives are not releasing any suspect information at this time and there have been no arrests.
This investigation is continuing.
