On Wednesday, July 13, 2005, Southeast Precinct Property Crimes detectives arrested 29-year-old Stacy Russel Jenkins on three counts of Burglary in the First Degree and one count of Attempted Burglary in the First Degree in connection with a series of cat burglaries in the Laurerhurst area of Northeast Portland. In the early morning hours of June 11, 2005, Southeast Precinct officers responded to a reported burglary in progress in the Laurelhurst area. The victim called police after chasing the suspect from their home. Several hours later an officer on routine patrol saw Jenkins, who matched the description of the suspect in the earlier burglary, walking through a nearby neighborhood. The officer contacted Jenkins and observed that he was in possession of some property. The officer could not determine the property was stolen and let Jenkins leave. Several days later, detectives connected the property to another residential burglary that had not been reported at the time the officer contacted Jenkins.
Subsequent investigation connected Jenkins to one burglary that occurred on June 25th, 2005, along with two completed burglaries and one attempted burglary that occurred on July 11, 2005.
Southeast Precinct has experienced an escalation of cat burglaries in Inner Northeast and Southeast Portland in the past several months. Investigators have yet to determine if Jenkins, who has a prior history of residential burglaries, is involved in any other recent burglaries.
This investigation is continuing.
