North Precinct Officers Discover the Bodies of Two Adults.

July 21, 2005 00:00

On July 21, 2005, at 10:33 a.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched on a “welfare check” to a residence in the 9500 block of North Polk Avenue after an area resident called dispatch to report that they had not seen the occupants of the home for several days. Officers arrived and forced entry to the home with the assistance of the Portland Fire Bureau. Once inside, officers discovered the bodies of an adult male and an adult female. Based on evidence at the scene, officers concluded that they had been dead for several days and they did not, most likely, die of natural causes. Homicide Detectives were called to the scene to initiate an investigation.

Homicide Detectives and Criminalists from the Portland Police Bureau Identification Division are now processing the crime scene. Because of the advanced state of decomposition, the identities of the victims are not readily apparent. Further information will be available after an autopsy which is currently scheduled for Friday, July 22, 2005.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jon Rhodes at (503) 823-0459 or Detective Lynn Courtney at (503) 823-0451.

This investigation is continuing.

Update:

AUTOPSY CONFIRMS DEATHS ARE MURDER / SUICIDE

On July 21, 2005, at 10:33 a.m., North Precinct officers discovered the bodies of 40-year-old Stacy Shapleigh and 42-year-old Robert Charles Mikus after officers were dispatched to a residence in the 9500 block of North Polk Avenue on a “welfare check.” An autopsy has confirmed that both died of a single gunshot wound to the head. Investigators believe that Mikus shot Shapleigh and then turned the gun on himself, committing suicide. A handgun of the same caliber used in the shooting was found at the scene. There is no prior history of domestic violence at the residence and detectives are still exploring possible motives for the crime.

Homicide detectives have confirmed that the last known contact with Mikus was on July 12, 2005, in Salem, Oregon. They are still attempting to locate anyone who may have had contact with Mikus or Shapleigh after July 12, 2005.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jon Rhodes at (503) 823-0459 or Detective Lynn Courtney at (503) 823-0451.

This investigation is continuing.
