On July 27, 2005, at 4:35 a.m., North Precinct officers and Police Bureau Detectives arrested 38-year-old James Raymond Gassner on one count of Rape in the First Degree, one count of Sodomy in the First Degree, one count of Robbery in the First Degree, one count of Kidnap in the First Degree, one count of Burglary in the First Degree, and one count of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle in connection with a stranger to stranger sexual assault that occurred on July 25, 2005.
The victim, a female resident of North Portland in her mid 40’s, first had contact with the suspect during the day on July 25, 2005, when he knocked on her door and asked her for work. The victim agreed to let Gassner do some yard work outside of her home and paid him a small amount of money. Later that night, Gassner returned to the house, forced his way inside and demanded money. While in the home, Gassner sexually assaulted the victim and eventually forced her into her car. At about midnight as Gassner was driving the victim through North Portland, the victim jumped out of her car and ran to a nearby business where she called police.
Officers arrived and notified detectives who initiated an investigation. Later in the morning, officers located the victim’s car and through the continued investigation, North Precinct officers developed information identifying Gassner as the suspect. Early this morning, officers received information that Gassner may be in a residence in the 900 block of North Killingsworth Street. They established surveillance and, along with detectives, arrested Gassner when he walked out the door. Gassner has been lodged in the Justice Center Jail.
