Roommate arrested in Shooting Investigation

August 02, 2005 00:00

On August 2, 2005, at 1:15 p.m., Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detectives arrested 27-year-old Matthew William Evans on one count of Attempted Murder in connection with the August 1, 2005, shooting of 51-year-old Clair David Olsen. The investigation began when officers received a call of a possible shooting at the Ruttinger Mobile Home Park located in the 7200 block of Southeast Flavel Street. Officers arrived and eventually located Olsen in a mobile home. Olsen had suffered what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his head. At the time officers contacted Olsen he was conscious and walking. He was transported to OHSU to receive treatment for what appeared to be a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Officers contacted detectives and began to conduct the initial investigation.

While receiving medical treatment, Olsen’s condition began to deteriorate to the point that doctors became concerned that he may not survive his injuries. Based on the change in Olsen’s condition, homicide detectives were called to the scene to initiate an investigation.

Detectives continued the investigation and, based on information from doctors treating Olsen and witness statements, identified Olsen’s roommate Matthew Evans as a suspect. Earlier today, Evans was arrested and booked into the Justice Center Jail.

Anyone with information in this investigation is asked to call Detective Ken Whattam at (503) 823-0696 or Detective Steve Ober at (503) 823-4033.

This investigation is continuing.
