On Wednesday, August 31, 2005, from 6:45 a.m. to 10 a.m., Portland Police Bureau Officers will donate their time to take children from Southeast Portland shopping for back-to-school clothes at the Southeast Fred Meyer, located at 5253 SE 82nd Avenue in Portland. This is the third annual “Shop with a Cop,” which is funded by the Lents/Brentwood-Darlington Weed and Seed Project, the GREAT program, and Fred Meyer, who provides special discounts and breakfast for the parents. Last year, 45 officers donated their time and Fred Meyer provided discounts of up to 50%, which allowed the ninety-nine kids who participated to each receive school supplies and clothing worth almost $300.00. Representatives of the Wattles Boys and Girls Club will also be at Fred Meyer to provide information and award scholarships to their club.
This year, more than 90 children from ROSE Community Development’s affordable housing in the Lents and Brentwood-Darlington neighborhoods will have the opportunity to Shop with a Cop. In addition to providing school clothes and supplies, the event is a chance for police officers to build positive relationships with youth from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. The event also helps relieve the financial burden of the back-to-school season for families, and allows the participants to begin the school year feeling confident in their appearance and ready to succeed.
