Detectives from the Missing Persons Unit of the Portland Police Bureau are requesting the public’s help in locating 56-year-old Laurence “Larry” Melzer of Southeast Portland. Melzer was last seen on Thursday, September 22, 2005, at his home, located in the 1000 block of Southeast 33rd Avenue. According to family, Melzer was depressed and may be in need of immediate medical care. Investigators have determined that it is unusual for Melzer to be out of contact with family, friends and co-workers for an extended period. In addition, Melzer was the recent victim of a burglary at his home, where guns were taken.

Police in Southwest Portland recently located Melzer’s vehicle, a 1993 Silver Dodge Caravan with red pinstripes, which had been missing since his disappearance. Portland Police Detectives have impounded and examined the vehicle for evidence. The details of the search will not be released at this time.

Melzer is described as a 56-year-old white male, 6’0 feet tall and 160 pounds. Melzer is balding with salt-pepper hair that is often worn in a ponytail. He usually wears an English tweed driver’s cap and wears wire-rimmed glasses.

Detectives have not ruled out foul play, and are asking for people with information about Melzer’s whereabouts, or think they have seen Melzer, to call Detective Mike Weinstein of the Portland Police Bureau Missing Persons Unit at (503) 823-0446.
