Portland, Ore. – Community members interested in volunteering for the 10th annual Police Activities League (PAL) of Greater Portland Auction are invited to a Kickoff Gathering on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. at the Portland Police Association Club, 612 S.E. Alder Street. To pre-register, potential volunteers should call 503-823-0250 or email Pre-registration is required due to building security requirements. PAL is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors comprised of local police chiefs, community volunteers and business representatives. PAL offers recreational, athletic and educational programs designed to encourage and develop good citizenship. Police Officer Mickey Pease, who believed that through athletic programs kids lives could be turned around, founded PAL in Portland, Oregon. PAL was re-founded in 1990 when a group of civic leaders, citizens and law enforcement officers joined together to create solutions to the growing problem of gang involvement, and violence among youth. The PAL Auction Committee, which is a sub-committee of the PAL Board of Directors, gathers monthly and is charged with planning and implementing a fundraising dinner auction, which supports PAL’s youth programs. The Committee is currently recruiting volunteers with experience fundraising, networking with businesses, and/or volunteers who are willing to learn and have a passion for making a positive difference in children’s lives. The kickoff agenda will include an opportunity to have refreshments, learn about PAL, and brainstorm for the event planned for May 13, 2006. After serving on committees, many volunteers move up onto the PAL Board of Directors. “We are a lean organization which relies on dedicated volunteers to help us offer programs to needy youth each year,” said PAL Development Coordinator Megan Jolly. Volunteer applications are available at the PAL Administrative Office (449 N.E. Emerson), at the PAL Youth Center (424 N.E. 172nd), or at
