With the goal of improving community livability in Downtown Portland during the holiday season, Central Precinct, in partnership with several community-based organizations, has conducted, and will continue to conduct, a series of overlapping enforcement and education missions designed to reduce crime and the fear of crime. The missions include:
On November 18 and 20, officers and citizens distributed more than 10,000 educational flyers with information helping citizens protect themselves from car prowls. The mission will continue on December 10, 2005.
On November 20, 2005, Central Precinct officers conducted a prostitution mission in Northwest Portland that led to the arrest of 14 suspects. Additional missions are planned during the holiday season.
On November 21, 2005, Central Precinct officers conducted a warrant sweep mission targeting street-level narcotics trafficking and sex offenses that led to the arrest of 22 suspects.
Beginning November 22, 2005, and continuing throughout the holiday season, officers will increase patrols in public areas, such as Pioneer Courthouse Square, and along Northwest 21st and Northwest 23rd Avenues.
On Friday, November 25, 2005, officers will conduct a visibility mission, with increased patrols at several events in Downtown Portland. Many of the officers will be wearing bright yellow jackets and will be seeking public contact and talking with citizens about crime prevention.
While the Central Precinct Street Crimes Team continues to directly respond to areas where business owners and citizens need assistance, officers, in coordination with health professionals, will also be reaching out and attempting to help drug addicted citizens in our city.
