NEAR FATAL ACCIDENT INVOLVING MAX TRAIN

On April 11, 2002, at 1:27 P.M. Portland Police responded to the scene of an accident involving a MAX Train Eastbound on Northeast Holliday Street and a 2002 Ford Taurus Northbound on Northeast Grand Avenue. The driver of the car has been identified as 71-year-old Jethro Franklin and the passenger as 69 year old Delores Franklin of Northeast Portland.

The investigation revealed that Franklin was in the right center lane and traveled through the intersection failing to stop for the red light. Franklin’s vehicle was hit by the Max train and pushed eastbound, approximately 136 feet, before coming to a stop. Both Jethro and Delores Franklin were transported to Emanuel Hospital with serious injuries. Jethro Franklin was cited for careless driving. The driver of the MAX Train, identified as 29-year-old Aaron Cowell, was uninjured.
