5 Suspects Arrested for Assaulting Jogger on Bike Path

January 26, 2006 00:00

On Monday, January 23, 2006, at 10:19 p.m., 32-year-old Andrew Yarusso was jogging on the bike path near the 6800 block of North Lombard when he encountered five suspects on the path. The victim was punched by one of the suspects and struck in the head with a blunt object by a second. Yarusso fell to the ground as all five suspects took turns assaulting him. Yarusso broke free and found a bicyclist who called police. North Precinct officers arrived in the area and a short time later, found three of the suspects; 18-year-old Trevor Smallwood, 17-year-old Marty Smallwood, and 15-year-old Sean Tapio. All three were transported to the Detective Division and each was charged with one count of Assault in the Second Degree.

Detectives continued the investigation, and on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, North Precinct officers located and arrested the two remaining suspects: 15-year-old Alan Jamerson and 17-year-old Antione Robinson. Both were charged with one count of Assault in the Second Degree. Detectives believe robbery may have been the motive for the assault.

The victim in this assault suffered a concussion, a deep laceration to his forehead and multiple bruises, but does not have life-threatening injuries. During the investigation and subsequent interviews, detectives learned that these suspects may have been involved in other similar, but unreported crimes, during the past week. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jim McCausland at (503) 823-0871.

This investigation is continuing.
