On Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at 6:27 am, Southeast Precinct officers responded to a possible sexual assault and shots fired call in the 8100 block of Southeast Center Street. Officers arrived and contacted a female victim who stated that she was walking eastbound on Southeast Center Street when a suspect physically forced her to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her. During the assault, the victim began to scream for help. A family member of the victim heard the screams and came outside to help the victim. The family member began to chase the suspect who fired one round from a semi automatic pistol at the family member and then fled. The bullet did not hit the family member of the victim.
Officers cordoned off a large area in an attempt to find the suspect. A Police Bureau K-9 team did not locate the suspect, but did find a handgun and an article of clothing. Detectives are in the process of determining if either the clothing or handgun belonged to the suspect.
The victim was transported to an area hospital and, though she was deeply traumatized, did not sustain any life threatening injuries during the assault. The suspect is described as a 25-30 year-old black male with a muscular build. He is approximately 5’9”-5’10” and is bald. Investigators are not releasing a clothing description.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Steve Swan at (503) 823-0693.
This investigation is continuing.
