Suspect Arrested in Early Morning Sexual Assault

February 17, 2006 00:00

On Friday, February 17, 2006, 2:30 p.m., members of the US Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force and detectives from the Portland Police Bureau Sexual Assault Detail arrested 24-year-old Elijah Mikell Craig in the 8600 block of Southeast Causey Road on several felony charges including; Kidnap in the First Degree, Rape in the First Degree, Sodomy in the First Degree, Sex Abuse in the First Degree, and Unlawful Sexual Penetration in the First Degree, in connection with a January 31, 2006, sexual assault in the 8100 block of Southeast Center Street. The assault occurred when Craig forced the female victim to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her. During the assault, the victim began to scream for help. A family member of the victim heard the screams and came outside to help the victim. Investigators believe Craig fired one round from a semi-automatic pistol at the family member who was attempting to help the victim. The bullet did not hit the family member of the victim.

Investigators processed the crime scene and collected evidence, including forensic evidence, which was submitted to the Oregon State Police Crime Laboratory. Craig was identified as a suspect when the Oregon State Police Crime Laboratory analyzed evidence collected at the scene of the crime.

For investigative reasons, detectives are withholding information on the specific evidence collected or analyzed during this investigation.

When hearing of the arrest, Chief Derrick Foxworth expressed gratitude to the US Marshal’s Service, the Oregon State Police Crime Lab and the detectives from the Portland Police Bureau Sexual Assault Detail. Chief Foxworth said, “These types of partnerships are instrumental in solving neighborhood crime.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Steve Swan at (503) 823-0693. This investigation is continuing and additional charges are pending.
