Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle while Crossing SE 82
March 08, 2006 00:00
On March 8, 2006, at 10:29 am, Portland Police Bureau officers responded to the scene of a fatal collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle at SE 82nd Avenue and SE Ramona Street. Officers discovered the body of 92-year-old Blanche Knish in the crosswalk of SE 82nd Avenue. The driver of the Ford pick-up truck who struck Knish, 59-year-old Michael Smith and his passenger, Judith Smith, were uninjured. Portland Police Bureau Traffic Investigators determined that Knish was crossing SE 82nd Avenue in an easterly direction from SE Ramona Street. She cleared the first lane of southbound traffic and then was struck by Smith as she started to cross the second lane of southbound traffic. Investigators do not believe speed was a factor in the collision and are doubtful alcohol consumption played a role in Smith’s operation of his vehicle.
Once the investigation has been completed, it will be forwarded to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office for a review of possible criminal charges and/or citations. Investigators are still interviewing witnesses and have not completed the investigation.
