April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

April 11, 2006 00:00

The Portland Police Bureau, a Member of the Multnomah County Child Abuse Multi-Disciplinary Team, would like to remind everyone that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. This year’s theme is “Safe Children, Healthy Families” which reminds all of us of the important role we play in keeping children safe and families strong.

Nationally, each year approximately one million children are victims of child abuse or neglect. Four children a day die from the effects of child abuse, the majority of which are under the age of four. In 90 percent of the child abuse cases, children are hurt by someone they know, love, or trust.

Whether you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, neighbor or family friend, nearly everyone has a child in their life that they care about and want to see happy and healthy. The Portland Police Bureau encourages community members to become involved by partnering with us and other support agencies in the community to help prevent child abuse and the environments that create it.

For more information about community activities planned for the month of April, call the Multnomah County Commission on Children, Families and Communities at 503-988-4008.
