Friends of Trees brings people together to plant and care for city trees and green spaces. Since their founding in 1989, thousands of volunteers have planted about 450,000 trees and native plants.
The Plant It Portland! campaign emphasizes four key things that “grow” on trees: better health, energy conservation, a safer community, and even money. Through their Green Space Initiative, their volunteers plant tens of thousands of native trees and plants each year in the Willamette and Columbia watersheds to clean our rivers and restore habitat for songbirds and endangered fish.
Their plantings not only green our neighborhoods but bring neighbors together for a fun morning of planting. The community spirit grows as the trees they planted together grow.
- Friends of Trees secured a grant for durable dishware to use at their planting events. As a result they've have been able to eliminate the need for disposable dishware.
- Friends of Trees has participated in the BTA Bike Commute Challenge for 3 years with 80% participation. Encouraging biking and encouraging mass-transit use through our transit pass program has allowed them to achieve a high percentage of non-car commuters.
- Friends of Trees has installed an eco-roof and planted native species at their office to absorb rainwater and cut down on stormwater runoff.
