City of Portland, Bureau of Planning and Sustainability

About

logoThrough partnerships and collaboration, BPS provides: Citywide strategic and comprehensive land use planning; neighborhood, district, economic, historic and environmental research, planning and urban design; policy and services to advance energy efficiency, green building, waste reduction, composting and recycling, solar and renewable energy use, and local sustainable food production; as well as actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Achievements

Gold Certification

  • The bureau’s Sustainable Operations Committee hosts monthly Green Bag lunches, which range from guest speakers to tours and videos and discussion about sustainability practices.
  • For public meetings where food is provided, staff developed a list of preferred sustainable caterers and guidelines for best practices around purchasing and serving food. A set of durable dishes were purchased for use at public meetings. Other durable dishware (mostly donated by staff) is used by staff in the kitchen area.
  • Sustainable Operations Committee members conduct evening energy walk-throughs at random intervals, and staff who turned off all their equipment at night find candy or notes at their desks in the morning. There has been a noticeable decrease in computers, monitors, speakers, desk lamps and other electronics left on over the course of two years.
  • Working with City and building management, the Sustainable Operations Committee had a dedicated indoor bike room installed in the building. The prior indoor location, still in use, is also a loading dock and storage space, while the new room is specifically for bike parking.
  • The bureau has won the Bike Commute Challenge (Public Agency, 100-499 employees) since 2009.
