Interface is a multidisciplinary firm focused on sustainable building sciences for energy and water efficiency. Offering mechanical, electrical and plumbing consulting, they advocate sustainable business practices in their project work as well as in their internal culture. As a leader in demand reduction, Interface educates staff and tenants of their buildings about the benefits of conservation and how each individual’s behavior impacts building energy and water use.
Interface designed the mechanical/electrical systems for the LEED Platinum Certified Collaborative Life Sciences Building, as well as for the LEED Platinum Certified Hood River Middle School Music & Science Building, which is the first public school building to achieve net-zero certification through the Living Building Challenge program.
With an official green operation team established in March 2012, Interface Engineering has met many significant sustainability goals and continues to surpass these benchmarks.
- Green Power Alliance Member: Each year, Interface purchases 745,300 kWh of renewable energy credits (REC) which contributes to approximately 838,650 lbs of CO2 emission reduction.
- Comprehensive recycling, composting, and waste reduction program: Reduction numbers are posted weekly and monthly. The green team frequently trains staff on ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle to decrease overall consumption and minimize overall landfill ratios.
- Sustainable catering practices: Reusable hardware/glassware and eco-laundered linen napkins replace disposable options. Free full service beverage station is available to employees/guests, minimizing bottled water/sodas & aluminum cans.
- Employees who carpool, bike, or walk to work receive monthly monetary compensation.
- Interface subsidizes 60% of employees’ TriMet passes.
- Paper products are all 30% post-consumer recycled content or higher. Binders and marketing materials are generated on 100% recycled materials.
- Office coffee is 100% free trade, sustainably grown, and organic. All cleaning products are green certified.
- Sustainable Living/Green Committee Site: Located on Interface’s intranet, this site is updated regularly to include waste recovery data, local sustainability events, ride sharing programs, and sustainability policies and procedures. The site conveys sustainable educational information to employees and continues to grow the green culture.
- Energy reduction measures include occupancy sensors, ENERGY STAR® appliances, and 50%+ of office energy is purchased from renewable sources.
- Low-flow restroom and kitchen faucets and dual-flush toilets significantly reduce office water consumption.
- Community outreach and employee well-being is encouraged by management and practiced team members. This includes annual participation in the Oregon Beach Clean Up, BTA Bike to Work Challenge, Terracycle Brigades, Habitat for Humanity, the Oregon Food Bank’s Canstruction competition, and regular donations by staff to local and national charities.
