logoSunstone is a Montessori community that fosters the next generation of skilled problem solvers, free thinkers, explorers of the world and stewards of the earth.  Our vision is to inspire the curious, independent, and compassionate human in every child, parent, and community member. 

An accredited AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) school, centrally located in SW Portland, Sunstone serves children ages 15th months to 12 years. Sunstone is a certified Oregon Green School as well as one of the top 100 Non-Profit Businesses to Work for in Oregon.

Achievements

Gold certification

  • Implemented a school-wide color-coded bin system to reduce waste and maximize recycling.
  • Conduct annual waste audits by sorting and weighing our trash.
  • Collect Styrofoam, light bulbs, and batteries for recycling.
  • Hold neighborhood Fall and Spring electronics recycling collection events in partnership with Green Century Electronics Recycling.
  • Maintain a variety of gardens on campus for educational and practical uses.
  • Educates the school community about packing waste-free lunches: purchasing in bulk, using reusable containers and reducing food waste by only packing what can be eaten.
  • Use durable dishes, silverware and cloth napkins in the classroom and at school events.
  • Repurpose office supplies (scrap paper, file folders, pens/pencils).
  • Purchase items with post-consumer recycled content.
  • Turn off unneeded lights during the day and computer equipment at night.
  • Installed dual-flush toilets and faucet aerators.
  • Partner with Willamette Riverkeepers and Portland Parks & Recreation to sponsor a section of Willamette River near campus where the Upper Elementary students provide ongoing stewardship through service.
  • Engage students, staff and parents in Earth Day celebrations including projects to beautify campus and maximize conservation measures.
  • Hold an annual Used book Exchange to celebrate Earth Day and to encourage the school community to reuse as well as to reduce and recycle.
  • Participates in the annual Walk and Bike to School Month in May by challenging the school community to consider alternative ways to get to school such as walking, biking, skateboarding, carpooling and taking the bus.
