In partnership with the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA), Safe Routes to School offers Bicycle Safety Education at 40 Portland schools every year.
Bicycle Safety Education (BSE) is taught to 5th grade students during the school day. The curriculum includes 10 hours of in-class instruction and outdoor on-the-bike practice. The class ends with at least one graduation group ride through the neighborhood.
Volunteer opportunity! Contact the BTA to volunteer for the graduation ride at a school near you.
If you are interested in receiving Bicycle Safety Education at your school, start by talking with school teachers and the Principal. Getting support from school administration and staff is key to a successful education program. See our Education Requests page for more details.
Curriculum developed by our friends at the Bicycle Transportation Alliance; intended for students at 4th or 5th grade levels.
