Ten Toe Express: A Transportation & Health Partnership
Walking for short trips is a great transportation option which benefits your health too!
The purpose of the Ten Toe Express was to promote the transportation and health benefits of a more active lifestyle. The campaign’s message was reinforced by a major sponsorship by Kaiser Permanente.
The centerpiece of the campaign was the walking kit, which included a digital pedometer to count one’s steps, the Southeast Portland Walking Map, guided walk schedule, and a coupon book for local businesses with over $100 in savings. Five thousand walking kits were distributed though direct mail orders to residents of the Eastside Hub Target Area, which was made up of the Laurelhurst, Mt. Tabor, Sunnyside, CENTER neighborhoods and portions of Richmond, South Tabor and Montavilla neighborhoods.
The Ten Toe Express Walks, conducted May to October 2005, were free and open to all. Some were short; some were long; all highlighted great places to walk. They included walks centered on Mt. Tabor & Laurelhurst Parks, the history of SE Hawthorne and Belmont, a Pup Crawl (walk with your dog), and a sketchbook walk.
