Portland Safe Routes to School - How to Report a School Safety Problem

To help guide the public to real solutions to traffic safety problems, the Portland Bureau of Transportation created a Transportation Safety and Neighborhood Livability Line, 823-SAFE (503-823-7233).

Requests can be phoned in or e-mailed to Safe@portlandoregon.gov. Calls are generally answered within three working days, Monday through Friday; e-mails are generally responded to within ten days.

This is the best way to report safety problems and concerns at your school. Issues may include but are not limited to concerns about crosswalks, proper signage, visibility, and traffic speed & volume. For examples of service requests please see the Traffic Safety website here.

Note that calls and requests from school principals are prioritized, so try checking in with your school principal to see if you share similar concerns about school traffic safety before submitting your request.

Yard Sign Lender Program

PBOT has several "Share the Road" yard signs available to lend to community residents. Each 18" x 24" sign comes with a steel A-frame for quick and easy display.

To request a sign, residents must complete an I Share the Road pledge form, fill out the Yard Sign Lender Program order form, and include a $25 deposit (to be returned within 15 days after return of the yard sign in good condition). Alternately, you may skip the deposit by sending in six completed pledge forms from neighbors along with the order form.

All signs say "Slow Down! Set the Pace" on one side; choose from three messages for the other side:

  • Slow Down! Look for kids & seniors
  • Stop for Pedestrians
  • Look for Bikes, Pass Safely

For more information contact Sharon White, sharon.white@portlandoregon.gov.

School Engineering Strategies Reports

Several Safe Routes schools have an Engineering Strategies Report prepared by a City engineer. These reports outline current conditions and suggestions for improvement. At the end of each report is a list of these encouragement, enforcement, and engineering recommendations; some projects are in process or have already been completed.
