A little history...

Portland Sunday Parkways is about connecting neighborhoods and people: walkers, runners, bicyclists, seniors, adults, and children all enjoying streets filled with surprises, performers, physical activities and food – and traffic-free.  The 6-8 mile routes connect Portland’s beautiful parks and offer a chance for participants to listen to music, try other activities, such as hula hooping, or just relax and enjoy the smiling faces.

The City of Portland held its first Sunday Parkways event in North Portland, June 2008. It was a huge success! Six miles of local streets were closed to traffic from 8am to 2pm.  Sunday Parkways began as a one-time event organized by the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). The $150,000 cost was paid for by a combination of grants and sponsorships.

What we heard from residents was a recurring request for more.  In 2009, Sunday Parkways was increased to three events, one a month June to August, 10am-4pm.  A remarkable 15,000, 22,000 and 25,000 Portland area residents walked, biked, jogged, skated or rolled at the events held in North, Northeast and Southeast Portland. In 2010, we increased to five dates, one a month May to September, 10am-3pm.  The events were held in North, Northeast, East, Northwest and Southeast Portland.  We had about 91,000 people come out and enjoy the festivities.

In 2011, we will again have five dates but with longer routes.  The areas of town will be the same as 2010, though we will be going through some new neighborhoods.  We are working on bringing the fun to communities that are not always included.

We are looking forward to a great Sunday Parkways season.  Come join us!
