Portland also has about 59 miles of roads that are not paved and were not built to City standards, and therefore not maintained.
If you live on one of these unimproved streets and are interested in upgrading your street to City standards, then please visit these pages.
Benefits of upgrading:
* Paved streets are easier to navigate - to walk, bicycle and drive on.
* Paved streets that are improved with a city permit and to city standards become the responsibilty of the City to maintain - not the neighboring residences.
* Stormwater will be channeled properly. Often people on gravel streets experience problems with localized flooding, which can be solved when streets are upgraded to City standards.
To find out more, visit the City of Portland's residential streets program where you can find out design options and ways to pay for the upgrade.
