Driveway Clearance

Below are the guidelines and instructions for how to establish a driveway clearance.

You may paint your own driveway clearance if:

  1. You paint only the curb returns (including face of returns), wings (including face of wings) and/or the throat.  You may not paint outside the curb returns or wings.
  2. You must use "TRAFFIC LINE YELLOW" paint which may be purchased at traffic supply companies.  (See Yellow Pages of Telephone book.)
  3. The width of the paint must be not more than 8 inches wide as measured from and starting at the curb face.
  4. You may not paint a driveway clearance if the driveway is located at or within a prohibited parking area such as "No Parking At Any Time," "No Parking In This Block," "Truck Loading Zone All Days, All Hours," etc.
  5. You may not paint a driveway clearance at a curb cut (driveway) which does not meet the definition of a driveway (see Title 16).

For additional details and explanations, please click here.

You may pay the City to paint your driveway clearance: (please see Sample driveway clearance drawing)

If painting the curb returns or wings is not possible or is perceived as insufficient, you may request that the Bureau of Transportation paint a larger driveway clearance and/or install no-parking signage.  The Bureau will individually evaluate each request.   Since this service is for the benefit of the requester rather than the general public, the following fees will be charged:

Service Cost  Notes
Painting $360
(Upon request)
Necessary Signs
(Staff determined)
$75 Each.  Generally used in unimproved right-of-way.

To request a special driveway clearance:

Write or e-mail a letter to the Bureau explaining your situation.  Please include your name, address, and daytime telephone number.  A rough sketch of the problem area would be helpful.  A Parking Technicians will contact you to determine the appropriate action and fees.  Driveway Clearance Applications will be accepted throughout the year.  However, actual paintings will occur during the months of May through October, depending on weather conditions.

Send it to:

  2. Referred to the City Code Hearings Officer, who is empowered to initiate legal action and can levy fines up to $500 a day for code violations.
