Senior Strolls was a brand new outreach program in 2005 designed to offer seniors an easy, pleasant, and social exercise option. Weekly strolls were around one hour, and incorporated warm-up and cool-down stretches as part of the routine. Walks stressed the health benefits of walking including reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity. Walking with a group provided the added benefits of a valuable support network and new friendships!
Strolls were offered this summer every Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. starting in locations in and around the Eastside Hub. Participants went at their own pace as they enjoyed the scenery around them. Strolls were held in parks as well as neighborhoods and commercial areas. They were accessible and had rest rooms and benches on each route. Each starting point was conveniently located along a TriMet bus route.
