Youth Bicycle Helmet Program

Numerous medical studies have shown that wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet can reduce the chance of brain injury by up to 85 percent. Additionally, Oregon law requires bicycle helmets for those riders or passengers under 16 years old.

Transportation Options worked in the Portland Eastside Hub Target Area to fit and distribute 1000 bicycle helmets. The primary audiences for bicycle distribution were low-income residents and families in the Eastside Hub target area. However, residents interested in bicycling as a means of transportation or leisure, wish to make positive changes in their personal travel behavior or that participate in Options sponsored bicycle events were also eligible. Those who received a bike helmet also received a fit guide entitled "A Perfectly Fitted Bicycle Helmet – 7 Easy Steps to Follow". The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) designed this illustrated brochure.
