The Portland Water Bureau monitors for approximately 200 regulated and unregulated contaminants in drinking water, including pesticides and radionuclides. Monitoring water quality ensures that disinfection and treatment effectively preserve public health and that Portland's water complies with all applicable drinking water regulations. We collect samples from the Bull Run watershed, Columbia South Shore Well Field, in-town reservoirs, the distribution system, and customers' taps for regulatory compliance, water system operations, and customer service.
The Portland Water Bureau collects approximately 11,000 water samples each year from throughout the water system. We conduct about 49,000 water analyses on those samples. In addition, the bureau performs about 27,000 quality control tests during sample analysis to ensure high quality data. The Portland Water Bureau's Water Quality Laboratory is accredited by both the National and Oregon Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Programs.
