  • Recycling Locations A recycling area at the Interstate facility.

  • Recycling Metal The Water Bureau recycles metal water meter couplings.

The bureau has a diverse waste stream consisting of office products and industrial materials. The bureau recycles and recovers the following materials: aluminum, paper, cardboard, bulk metal, plastics, batteries, electronics, glass, paint canisters, PVC pipe, personal protective equipment, tires, appliances, and construction debris. The bureau composts food waste and yard debris. For information on recylced and composted materials please visit the City’s recycling and composting guides.

City bureaus have a target of recovering (recycling and composting) 90% of waste generated from internal operations. The Water Bureau's recovery rate was 75% in Fiscal Year 2013-2014 across bureau facilities, an increase from 73% the previous year. This rate does not include Water Bureau recycling or composting located at the Portland Building which is tracked separately by the City's Bureau of Internal Business Services.

The bureau also generated 267,967 pounds of garbage in FY 2013-2014, a 30% decrease compared to the previous year. The Interstate facility generated 67% of bureau garbage. Sustainability and Green Team staff continue to train employees on waste reduction and recycling at bureau facilities to increase the Water Bureau's recovery rate.
