The program targets testing the water in households most at risk from lead in water: homes built between 1970 and 1985 with pregnant women or children age six or younger in the home. The Portland Water Bureau is pleased to offer this testing to all households with concerns about plumbing and lead in drinking water.
The Portland Water Bureau processes the samples at its water quality laboratory which is accredited by the State of Oregon and the EPA. Customers receive test results in approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
The Portland Water Bureau works in cooperation with other water utilities to offer this program. Customers of the water utilities listed below also receive free lead in water testing:

- City of Sherwood
- Lake Grove Water District
- Palatine Hill Water District
- Raleigh Water District
- Rockwood Water PUD

In 2008, the Portland Water Bureau laboratory tested over 1100 lead-in-water samples for Portland Water Burea customers and over 130 samples for customers of participating wholesale providers.
