A contractor for the Portland Water Bureau has started construction on a new section of supply of pipeline on SW 10th Avenue, near SW Chestnut Street. The Carolina Mains Project will take about 10 months to complete under normal weather conditions.
For the first four months, the work will involve making pipe connections to the three existing Burlingame water storage tanks at 6932 SW 10th Avenue. Pipe will then be installed down SW 10th Avenue, turn onto SW Chestnut Street and end at the intersection SW Burlingame Avenue.
This project will accomplish several important water system goals that include installing upgraded seismic piping to the tank and increasing the pipe diameter to 24-inch to meet future demand. The project will require the contractor and Water Bureau field crews to alternate their work therefore the street will be excavated and repaved several times.
There will be construction associated noise, dust and use of heavy equipment and vehicles. Motorists and bicyclists are encouraged to avoid this section of SW 10th Avenue during work hours. Typical work hours will be 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
