Carbon Footprint Reporting at the Portland Water Bureau

The Portland Water Bureau has completed its seventh annual Carbon Footprint Report for 2012. Each year the Water Bureau analyzes total bureau fuel and energy use and calculates the associated greenhouse gas emissions illustrated below. Understanding how and in what quantities the bureau is generating carbon emissions provides staff with important tools for managing and reducing this contributing source of global climate change.

Electricity and natural gas trend data help the Water Bureau’s Energy Committee track down and mitigate energy use inefficiencies for the bureau’s pump stations and facilities. Electricity remains the bureau’s largest contributor to carbon emissions, but the bureau generated less overall emissions from electricity use in 2012 than in the previous year. However, fuel use and associated carbon emissions are rising compared to the previous two years. The bureau will address this trend by continuing to train employees on driving more efficiently, and closely tracking vehicle use.

The Carbon Footprint Report also describes carbon emissions mitigation results for 2012 and outlines other planned actions to reduce the bureau’s emissions for the coming year.
