Water main break at SE 8th & SE Division

Just after 7:00 am this morning, Portland Water Bureau crews were dispatched to a water main break at the intersection of SE 8th Avenue and SE Division Place.

Upon arrival on-scene, crews quickly blocked off street and pedestrian access. They then determined that an eight-inch cast iron pipe installed in the early 1920’s had ruptured.

The ruptured pipe caused the newly poured asphalt in the intersection to buckle.  The cause of the break is unknown at this time but could be attributed to the pipe’s age.

Throughout today and tonight, crews will work to repair the main break and affected surrounding pipe. Traffic is being diverted from the area.

Due to the break, water service has been shutdown to four commercial customers in the immediate area.  Commercial customers can expect to have water service restored by tomorrow morning.

Residential customers in the vicinity may experience “discolored water.” The Portland Water Bureau reminds customers that there is no health hazard associated with the discolored water. If customers encounter dirty water, please run the cold water faucets in your home or business for about two to five minutes, or until the water clears. Customers who continue to experience problems with water quality are asked to contact the bureau’s Water Quality Line at 503- 823-7525.

Crews from the Portland Water Bureau are responding to a water main break at the intersection of SE 8th Avenue and SE Division Street. Work to repair the pipe will quickly get underway once water is shutdown to the pipeline.

The cause of the break is unknown at this time.

As this is a high-travel time of the morning, motorists and bicyclists are encouraged to find alternate routes to avoid traffic delays.

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
