Portland Water Bureau Crews Ready to Respond to Water Emergencies 24/7

By Lindsay Wochnick

Just over this past weekend, Portland Water Bureau crews responded to over 200 calls from customers concerned about no water service. Crews determined that most of these calls where related to frozen pipes inside the home.

The Portland Water Bureau wants to remind our customers that they can themselves take steps to reduce the possibility of frozen pipes:

  • Customers can protect their home plumbing by letting a slight drip of water run when temperatures dip below freezing, disconnect garden hoses and open cupboard doors in the kitchen and bathrooms.
  • If your pipes freeze, thaw plumbing lines safely with a hair dryer or heat lamp. Once the pipe has thawed, make sure to leave a little water running so the pipe doesn’t freeze again.
  • If a pipe inside your home breaks, close your main water shut-off valve to your house. Most shutoff valves are located where the water line enters the house, either at the front of your house where you connect your hose, or basement near the hot water heater, or inside the garage.
  • Turn off the water heater. Locate the dedicated shut-off valve on the cold water inlet.

The Portland Water Bureau is dedicated to providing Portland with a safe and reliable water supply. Maintenance & Construction crews are on standby, ready to respond 24-hours a day, seven days a week to repair broken water mains and address water emergencies.

Customers that experience urgent water problems should call the Portland Water Bureau’s 24/7 emergency hotline at 503-823-4874.
