Budget Briefs: Next Year’s Requested Budget Submitted

By Lindsay Wochnick

FY 2016-17 Requested BudgetOn Feb. 1, the Portland Water Bureau submitted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2016-17 Requested Budget to the City Budget Office. The requested budget meets regulatory requirements, helps to prepare us for the “Big One,” and strongly supports strategic initiatives to project the long-term health of our water system.

Stay in the Know

  • Rate Change: The Water Bureau is proposing a rate increase for FY 2016-17. Combined with the Bureau of Environmental Services, the proposed utility bill increase is 4.59 percent. This amounts to an average monthly utility bill increase of $4.55 in FY 2016-17.
  • Capital Budget: The requested capital budget continues to prioritize earthquake resilience and ongoing rehabilitation of aging infrastructure.

What’s Next
Over the next few months, Water Bureau Director Michael Stuhr and finance staff will present at City Council budget work sessions, address Council questions, and explain the proposed rate adjustment, decision packages, and capital investments. Staff will also attend public budget forums and the annual Council rate hearings

In late April, Mayor Charlie Hales will release the proposed budget decisions and in June, the City Council will vote to adopt next fiscal year’s budget.
