The exhibit was recently awarded a 2019 GDUSA Graphic Design Award. It is available for viewing in the Lizzie Weeks Room from now until the afternoon of Friday, February 28. New Permanent Art Mural by Soapbox Theory through RACC The Lizzie Weeks event space would not be complete without its namesake gracing the walls. Lizzie and several other historic photos of black women establishing lives in Portland at the turn of the century are depicted on the back wall of the room. Lizzie Koontz Weeks, 1879 - 1976, was a trailblazer in Portland's black community who helped black women attain the right to vote and fought through institutional racism to become a probation officer in the Multnomah County Court of Domestic Relations. The artist, Kayin Talton Davis, a mechanical engineer, was born in Portland and in 2005, she started Soapbox Theory — a business producing greeting cards, t-shirts, accessories, home décor, and more featuring positive images of Black culture. You may recognize Davis' work on North Williams Avenue that was co-created with husband Cleo Davis, an industrial engineer who has studied architecture. Eleven murals and 30 signs, between Broadway and Killingsworth Street are porcelain enamel tiles telling the history of the African American community along Williams Avenue. The history project grew out of PBOT's Williams Traffic Safety Project and was also through the Regional Arts Culture Council (RACC). EE Calendar City Nature Explorers Class (Ages 5-10) Community Events Hands-on, outdoor ecology classes for children Whitaker Ponds Natural Area - 7040 NE 47th Ave (Meet at the Gazebo) Topic for this class: Meet the Corvids! About City Nature Explorers classes: Your child can join the Environmental Education team to learn local ecology through sensory activities, science investigations, games, and exploration. Our trained outdoor educators will immerse your child in experiential learning with lessons that line up with common science units. Classes are active, social, engaging, and fun! A perfect option for students who are homeschooled or on spring break! Classes are 100% outdoors at a local park or natural area and take place rain or shine!
