Citywide Neighborhood Events Fighting for the Right to Fight Arts/Culture/Recreation The National World War 2 Museum exhibit will tell important stories of African Americans who enlisted during WW2 Oregon Historical Society, 1200 SW Park Ave NAME: Fighting for the Right to Fight DATE: July 12-January 12 COST: FREE LOCATION: Oregon Historical Society 1200 S.W. Park Ave., Portland, OR 97205 DESCRIPTION: From July 12- January 12, the The National WWII Museum will open a special exhibit at the Oregon Historical Society. The exhibit -- which includes oral histories, profile panels, and artifacts -- will tell the important stories of the thousands of African Americans who enlisted during World War II, and who were intent on serving the nation that treated them as second-class citizens. They were determined to fight to preserve the freedom that they themselves had been denied. The centerpiece of the exhibit is an original eight-minute video about the Tuskegee Airmen, who in many ways became the focus of African American participation during the war. The piece is narrated by TV personality Robin Roberts, whose own father flew with the Tuskegee Airmen during the war. Leach Botanical Garden, 6704 SE 122nd Avenue Leach Botanical Garden (outer southeast) - Botany surveys Date TBD within the next few weeks - contact JoAnn with schedule questions Join Leach Botanical Garden to conduct botany surveys in an area that is to be ecologically enhanced in the coming year! Leach Botanical Garden is enhancing 4.5 acres to incorporate more native habitat along Johnson Creek as part of an ongoing educational program. Fieldwork will include scientific surveys of existing plants and animals, with the goal of assessing and analyzing change before and after habitat enhancement. Multi-year research will provide high-level educational and community science opportunities to all ages, with an emphasis on youth and adults from historically marginalized communities assisting with planning and execution of the project in the near and long term - creating awareness and connection to a significant restorative green space. Partners include Johnson Creek Watershed Council, Blueprint Foundation, Wisdom of the Elders, David Douglas High School Science Department and Lent K-8 School. Before proceeding with the habitat enhancement and monitoring project we need to collect baseline plant data, so we are seeking trained folks to do plant transects as soon as possible in this year's one-acre plot. In the spring, the students will have participated in training workshops and will be able to take a leading role in conducting these survey transects.
