Calltakers & Dispatchers sign up for their shift twice per year, in March & September. Employees sign up based on seniority, which means our newer employees may be working evenings, nights, and/or weekends once they certify at Calltaking, Police Dispatch, and Fire/Medical Dispatch. The hours of the established shifts typically do not change, but are subject to change due to staffing coverage.
Most of the shifts offered are 4/10's, meaning the employee works 4 ten-hour days each week and enjoys three days off. We refer to the days off as the employee's weekend, regardless of the actual days.
There are a few shifts that are twelve-hour days. These shifts are referred to as Rotating Shifts and employees will work two days on, three days off, two days on during the first week of the two-week pay period. During the second week, they will work the opposite, two days off, three days on, two days off. Essentially, the days on/off flip flop from week-to-week. Employees like this shift because they can get a piece of the actual weekend every other week.
To start with, however, our trainees are paired with a coach for on-the-job training and will be assigned to the shift their coach works. Trainees typically rotate every few months between coaches and shifts.
The Spring 2018 Shift Signup consists of twelve shifts. They are:
