The City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services is continuing our work to repair and replace critical sewer and stormwater infrastructure. Environmental Services will continue to provide information and updates on construction schedules and activities during the COVID-19 emergency.

Updated May 7, 2020

Environmental Services is in the early stages of designing a stormwater management project in the Portsmouth Neighborhood as part of an agreement with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). When it rains, stormwater carries all the pollution on the street such as bacteria, fertilizers, pesticides, oil, and dirt into the storm drains which go straight into the Columbia Slough. The goal of this project is to control this pollution and keep it from entering the Columbia Slough.

Engineers are designing a variety of methods to capture and filter the stormwater in your neighborhood, including green streets, stormwater filter vaults, and storm filter catch basins. These improvements will filter stormwater runoff, enhance public and environmental health, and protect water quality in the Columbia Slough.

The project is still in design and is anticipated to begin construction in spring 2022.
