Before and After: Heron Lakes

The Environmental Services Watershed Revegetation Program has recently revisited old restoration sites that were first planted along a Columbia Slough channel at Heron Lakes Golf Course. Before it was planted in 1996, the mowed grass there provided no shade to the water, making the conditions in the Slough less amenable for fish.

Now, the alder, cedar, and cottonwood forest is providing shade to cool the water, and many other benefits including bird nesting and foraging habitat (and a welcome fringe for golfers).  The below photos show the site evolving from the planting year to present. With our continued stewardship, these restored forests will continue to benefit the regions' people and wildlife.

For more information, visit the Watershed Revegetation Program and the Columbia Slough Watershed websites.

Wow! Very nice, BES. Keep up the good work!

It goes to show that the best time to plant a tree is always yesterday.
